According to the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) in the United States, it is estimated that counterfeiting of global food and consumer products may cost the industry $10-15 billion per year.

Olive oil has been one the most counterfeit product in the world. Besides the “extra virgin” problem, several brand are produced in clandestine factories around the world. In July 2019, sales were suspended by the food control in São Paulo after the discovery of huge factory
